2021 90:/5 June Season Toss & Fetch League Commemorative Patch
90:/5 June Season Brings
A Perfect Storm
“90:/5 June,” the next five-week-long K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch Worldwide League Season, begins Saturday, June 5, 2021 with this Season’s commemorative patch honoring Storm, Labelle, Quebec Club Captain Cara Smeeton’s first Frisbee dog, who passed suddenly on February 20th this year.
After driving two-hours one way to play with the Montreal Club for a season or two, Cara’s enthusiasm for League prompted her to start a Toss & Fetch Club closer to home in the Fall of 2019, and her border collie Storm was a founding member.
The Village of Labelle is nestled deep in the Canadian forest, two hours north of Montreal in the Laurentides region of Quebec, the traditional territory of the Algonquin First Nation. Today, it’s “a popular tourist destination, based on a cottage and lake culture in the summer, and a downhill and cross-country ski culture in the winter.”
Unfortunately, that first Labelle Season would be the last season Storm would get to play the game that brought him and Cara so much joy. After each year’s Fall Season, most of Canada sits out till the Spring thaw, then COVID hit, as we all know, sidelining Labelle all of 2020.
A couple months ago, on February 20th, Cara posted the sad news: “Last night we said our final goodbye to Storm. It came on rather suddenly. An aggressive tumor in his abdomen burst, so he was bleeding internally. The emergency Vet offered me options even though there really wasn’t any.
Storm was the best dog, my first disc dog, a perfect puppy, and so handsome. He would often tell us about his dreams chasing squirrels. Whenever we fostered kittens, he was always right in there letting them climb all over him and play with his tail. He completely resented having to wear booties in the winter but couldn’t walk unless he did.
I miss him so much already. Bye Stormie Poo, you handsome dude. Run Free XOXO”
