2020 90:/5 Fall Season Toss & Fetch League Commemorative Patch

TRAVELS WITH CHARLI

To celebrate and distinguish this new format from regular seasons, we’ve designed a five-pointed star patch, with the inaugural 90:/5 Fall 2020 patch honoring Millersville, Maryland League member Don Kushon’s beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Charli who passed in January 2019 at the tender age of 7.

Don and Charli’s travels began 8 years ago. While at a Dockdogs event in 2012, Don heard scuttlebutt about a cute pair of 14-week-old female Jack Russell pups someone was looking to place. A day later he was driving home with that prick eared pup who liked the little ball. She was a real cutie patootie. Her name became Charli.

For her size Charli possessed speed, acrobatic grace, determination and courage which made her thrilling to watch. She inspired Don to keep honing his skills so that he could be her best possible handler.

Over the next several years, Don and Charli entertained crowds and fellow competitors in a variety of dog sports, including a season in K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch League playing for the Reading, Pennsylvania Club.

Looking back, Don recounted, “Life was good. It was the year 2018 and my 6-year-old Shortie Jack Russell terrier, Charli, and I had a great year of fun in canine sports and terrier trials. We qualified, competed and titled in many arenas. WCFO, The World Canine Freestyle Organization titled Charli as Champion Dog in Musical Freestyle and we also placed first in a WCFO International Skit Competiton for a Pink Panther routine that year. We competed in the World Championships for Skyhoundz Disc, Dockdogs and the UKI US Open Agility Trials. At the UKI US Open we were on the podium twice for Speedstakes and Games.

During the summer Charli made an unofficial record with Dockdogs for being the smallest dog to ever successfully complete a Speed Retrieve and get on the books-this involved jumping off a 2-foot dock, swimming 40 feet and pulling down a bumper that was suspended 4 inches above the water.”

After that sport-filled summer, everything changed for Charli. In early January 2019 she became mysteriously ill. After several vet visits and misdiagnoses, 7-year-old Charli succumbed to the Lepto virus in late January 2019 breaking the hearts of everyone who knew her. Don’s travels with Charli had come to an untimely end.

The 90:/5 Fall 2020 patch honors Charli and all the other little disc dogs out there who give their all to the owners who love them.
