A Salute to Frank & MADD

Thirty years ago in the summer of 1992, Frank Montgomery was walking his dalmatian Alley Oop somewhere in the Boston area when he happened upon a dog frisbee competition sponsored by Alpo, a major dog food brand back then. Just like anyone who sees dogs competing in Frisbee their first time, Frank’s eyes lit up and he said to Alley Oop, “We can do this” and they entered.

It’s not clear how he fared that day, but Frank was hooked and disc dogging became a passion.

A year later, Frank & Alley Oop were among the finalist competing in Alpo’s National Championship on the lawn in front of the Washington Monument, in Washington DC.
For the next couple years Frank honed his Toss & Fetch and Freestyle game with Alley Oop stepping into the Skyhoundz format in 2001. In 2002, Frank was a Skyhoundz World Championship Toss & Fetch finalist with his new dog, Pixie Chick, finishing 8th.

Earlier in 2002, Frank teamed up with Jeff Stanaway to co-found the Mid-Atlantic Disc Dog Club (MADD). Sadly, his buddy Jeff, another pioneer in our sport, passed in December at the young age of 57.

Over the next 20 years, Frank, Jeff and eventually Ray Lowman, Frank’s partner for 30 years, would grow MADD into one of the largest dog frisbee clubs in the world with members in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania.

Today, MADD runs a dozen or more local and regional competitions throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, most of which are at their home field: Hawg Dog Farm in Millersville, Maryland – a dog sporting paradise. Because of their expertise and professionalism, MADD has become the hosting Club for the Skyhoundz World Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In 2016, MADD in Millersville became just the 6th Club to join the fledgling K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch League, taking part in Spring 2016 Season, the League’s 2nd season. Behind Frank, Millersville won the Summer 2019 Season Championship.

Now a multi-time World Champion, Frank’s disc dog journey that began with Alley Oop continued with every new dog he and Ray added to their pack over the years: Gracie Lou, Pixie Chick, Billy Boy, Bentley, Chicklet, and now Jagger, Frank’s 4-year-old Australian Shepherd who adorns the 90:/5 March Season patch.

Frank’s welcoming smile, low-key attitude, and friendly competitive spirit have made him one of our sport’s greatest ambassadors. With this 90:/5 March 2022 Season patch we salute Frank, all the dogs he’s played with past and present, and the MADD Club members.
