RAISE A MUG FOR TUGGER
THE 90:/5 FALL SEASON PATCH HONOREE
Twelve years ago, Albert Testar took his young Irish Setter Tugger to a local dog park for some exercising and socialization when the pair happened upon a guy playing Frisbee with his two corgis.
“Watching the corgis having a blast, Tugger decided he wanted to play and begged the guy for some throws. Just like that, I had a Frisbee dog!” recounted Al.
“I never saw the corgi guy again, but I’ve been playing K9 Frisbee ever since.”
The Mid-Atlantic USA has always been a hotbed for disc-dogging. Living in Eastern Pennsylvania, Albert & Tugger had plenty of opportunities to work their way into the sport. The pair soon became regulars at events in Maryland, Delaware, New York, and Eastern Pennsylvania.
Shortly after the K9 Frisbee Worldwide League began, Al & Tugger joined up with the Millersville, Maryland Club to play in the League’s 3rd season in the Summer of 2016. A year later they played with the Reading, PA Club and then in 2018 were members of the Elkton, Maryland Club.
“I wanted to start a Club closer to home in Pennsylvania, so I started looking for a field. I love visiting breweries so my mission was to find a place where I could combine my love for K9 Frisbee with beer.”
While downing a pint at the SlyFox Brewery in Pottstown, PA, Al asked the bartender if it would be possible to play on the pub’s disc golf field adjacent to the brewery. “The bartender put me in touch with the establishment’s event coordinator who gave the green light and we’ve been playing their ever since – providing fun entertainment to the brewery crowds.”
Starting with just 8 handlers on his roster in the Spring or 2019, Albert has now Captained the SlyFox Pottstown Club through 17 K9 Frisbee Season, which included two Canis Magnus Club Championships in the Summer of 202 and Winter 2021.
Up until two weeks ago, Tugger was at Al’s side. “Although he’s long been retired from disc, he was in fine shape . . . and then all of a sudden, he wasn’t.”
Tugger lived to the ripe old age of 13-and-a-half, “and he had a great life. You know it’s coming but it’s always heartbreaking,” said Al about his beloved Irish Setter who started him on his K9 Frisbee career.
