Progressive Doubles
Game Play & Rules

Two handlers. One dog. One disc. How high can your team go?

Objective

In Progressive Doubles, two human handlers alternate throws to a single dog teammate, scoring as many points as possible in 90 seconds.

With every successful 5-point catch, the throwing handler moves back 10 yards, progressively increasing the challenge, dynamics, and the fun.

Field Setup

  • Standard K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch field (50 yards long)
  • Game begins with both handlers and the dog behind the 30-yard line
  • Standard scoring zones apply (10–20 = 1 pt, 20–30 = 2 pts, 30–40 = 3 pts, 40–50 = 5 pts)
  • Throwing positions progress back toward the 0-yard line in 10-yard increments based on performance

Game Format

  • Round lasts 90 seconds, using the standard “Ready, Set, Go” audio timer
  • Both handlers begin behind the 30-yard line, alternating throws
  • A throw must travel at least 10 yards to be eligible for scoring
  • After the initial throw, the dog may be anywhere on the field, but each handler must throw from behind their current designated throwing line for each throw.
  • After a handler completes a 5-point catch (landed in the 40–50-yard zone), they move back to the next furthest throwing line (e.g., from 30 → 20 → 10 → 0 yards)
  • If the throw does not result in a 5-point catch, the handler remains at their current line for their next throw
  • Throws and catches must follow standard League rules (in bounds, 1 disc in play)
  • Teams may use one lure disc (different color) per handler
  • Roller throws by either handler are allowed if declared before the round begins
  • Tiny Dog bonus of +1 point is awarded for each valid catch
  • Air bonus (+0.5 points) is awarded for leaping air catches per Toss & Fetch rules
  • Junior handlers earn 1 point for a catch short of 10 yards or anywhere out of bounds.
  • All catches must be made at least 10 yards from the throw line (e.g., from the 20-yard line, a catch must land at 30 yards or beyond)

Scoring

  • Standard Toss & Fetch scoring zones apply
  • Each catch earns points, including:
    • Distance zone points (1, 2, 3, or 5)
    • +0.5 Air Bonus (for airborne catches)
    • +1 Tiny Dog Bonus (if applicable)
  • Only throws landing at least 10 yards from the throwing line are valid however Junior handlers score 1 point for short or out-of-bounds catches.
  • Final score is the sum of all valid catches made by either handler during the round

  • Local, regional, and worldwide leaderboards may be tracked

Rules Summary

  • Two handlers alternate throws to a single dog
  • All start behind the 30-yard line
  • 90-second timed round

  • No backward movement if no 5-point catch
  • One disc in play; optional lure disc per handler

  • Catches must be at least 10 yards from the throwing line to count

Exceptions to League Rules

  • Aim for 5-point zone early to gain ground and boost difficulty-based scoring
  • Communicate clearly between handlers to maintain rhythm
  • Train your dog to respond to alternating throwers without confusion
  • Use the lure disc wisely to redirect your dog after long runs
