How K9 Frisbee Clubs Are Ranked: Canis Magnus and Super 8 Explained
Understanding Canis Magnus and the Super 8 Division Challenge
If you’re new to the League — or even if you’ve been playing for years — one of the most common questions is:
How exactly are Clubs ranked?
There are two completely different Club ranking systems in the K9 Frisbee Worldwide League:
- 🏆 Canis Magnus Club Rankings (overall depth)
- 🥇 Super 8 Division Challenge (top-end strength)
Both use the same Team scores — but measure performance in very different ways.
NOTE: In League a “Team” is a person and a dog. Teams comprise local Clubs (or Squads if less than 8 people)
HOW TEAMS ARE RANKED
At the most basic level:
👉 Teams are ranked by their total cumulative score = raw score + handicap
Only a handler’s “A” dog counts toward Club points.
👉 An “A” dog = that handler’s highest scoring dog for that week
So even if someone plays 3 dogs, only their top dog contributes to Club scoring.
Team ranking is what drives everything else in the League.
Final Team Leaderboard Example
Here are the top 30 of the 1,670 Teams who played in the 90:/5 March 2026 Season of the K9 Frisbee Worldwide League.
Below this image is the Key that explains what each column means.

| COL | Label | Definition |
| A | Overall | The Team’s rank among all Teams worldwide |
| B | A | Identifies a handler’s dogs:
|
| E | Division | The handler’s current competition level (Expert, Master, Handler, Junior) |
| F | ® | Roller Dog: TRUE = Team competes using rollers (no handicap points awarded) |
| G | DIV | Rank within that Division only (Expert, Master, Handler, Junior) |
| I | Tiny cm | Designates a Tiny Dog. Height of dog at the withers, in centimeters. |
| N | Status | CLUB = 8 or more people, eligible for Club rankings and points SQUAD = Less than 8 but at least 4 people, not eligible for Canis Magnus points or Titles |
| P-S | Weekly 1–5 | The Team’s raw weekly scores (includes Tiny Dog bonus points) |
| T | LOW | Mulligan: lowest weekly score dropped
|
| U | H-CAP | Handicap points added weekly:
|
| V | Total | Total Score after:
👉 Used to rank Teams overall |
| W | Canis Magnus | Club points earned if Team finishes in Top 40%
|
| X | Super 8 | Points from Top 8 Teams per Club
|
| Y | Handler Promotions | Indicates if a handler earned a Division Promotion in Week 5 |
🏆 CANIS MAGNUS — THE BIG BOARD
HOW POINTS ARE AWARDED
Each week:
- All “A” Teams worldwide are ranked
- Only the Top 40% earn Canis Magnus Club Points
Example:
If there are 1,000 “A” Teams
- Top 400 Teams earn points
- 1st place = 400 points
- 2nd = 399
- 3rd = 398
… - 400th = 1 point
Everyone below 400th = 0 points
🔁 WHAT “POINTS ARE REALLOCATED EACH WEEK” MEANS
This is key:
👉 Points do NOT carry over from week to week
Each week is a fresh ranking.
Example:
- Week 1: Your Team finishes 50th → earns ~350 points
- Week 2: Same Team finishes 300th → earns ~100 points
👉 Your Club doesn’t “keep” the 350 from Week 1
👉 Week 2 replaces Week 1
So:
- Clubs rise and fall every week based onthat week’s performance only
- Final standings are based onWeek 5 (after mulligan)
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES
- Squads do NOT earn Canis Magnus points
- So their Teams cannot earn the Canis Magnus patch
🏆 Real Example: How Teams Earned Canis Magnus Points
90:/5 March 2026 Season
Every week, we report the Top 40% Canis Magnus cut-off so Teams know where they stand.
Here’s exactly what was reported in the final week of the season:
📊 TOP 40% CANIS MAGNUS
- 1,143 unique Handlers competed as “A” Teams, but just 1,046 were on full Clubs. Squad members are ineligible for Canis Magnus points
- 1,046 x .40 =418.4. We then round up to the highest 10, which is 420.
- So, the top 420 Teams in March earned Canis Magnus Club Points.
At the very top of the leaderboard:
- Timothy Geib & Procyon — 220.0 → 420 CM Points
- Dean Werts & Shout — 218.0 → 419 CM Points
- John McCurry & Duchess Kitiara — 216.5 → 418 CM Points

⚖️ THE CUT LINE — WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING
Now let’s look at the actual cut-off zone.
After applying the Mulligan (dropping each Team’s lowest week):
👉 Final Top 40% cut-off = 103.5 total points
🎯 WHAT THIS MEANS
👉 If a Team reached 103.5 or higher
→ They earned Canis Magnus Club Points
👉 If a Team scored below 103.5
→ They earned 0 Club Points
✅ JUST ABOVE THE LINE (Earned Points)
These Teams made it into the Top 40%:
- Carolyn Conway & Boomer — 104.5 → 12.0 CM Points
- Paul Selegue & Clyde — 104.5 → 12.0 CM Points
- Several Teams at 104.0 → 6.5 CM Points
👉 These Teams were safely inside the Top 40%
👉 They earned low but valuable Club points
🟡 THE EXACT CUT-OFF — 103.5
These Teams hit the final qualifying number exactly:
- Tammy Stockton & Swoop (Gilbert) — 103.5 → 1.0 CM Point
- Lisa Lamoureux & Lizzie (Payson) — 103.5 → 1.0 CM Point
- Leslie Cook & Jewel (Payson) — 103.5 → 1.0 CM Point
- Kally Mozell & Timber (Salt Lake City) — 103.5 → 1.0 CM Point
- Fitz Medlin & Jetty (Wilmington) — 103.5 → 1.0 CM Point
👉 These Teams were the last Teams inside the Top 40%
👉 103.5 = the difference between scoring and not scoring
❌ JUST BELOW THE LINE — NO POINTS
Now look what happens just half a point lower:
- Jeff Schmitt & Astrid (Akron) — 103.0 → 0 points
- Debbie Zendlo & Tilly (Akron) — 103.0 → 0 points
- Multiple Teams at 103.0 → 0 points
🥇 How Super 8 Divisions Are Seeded
One of the things that keeps the League fresh, competitive, and fun is how we seed Clubs into Super 8 Divisions each season.
There’s no single fixed method — and that’s by design.
We use three different approaches, rotating and mixing them season-to-season to create new matchups and give more Clubs a chance to compete.
📊 1. Power Score Seeding (Performance-Based)
In some seasons, Divisions are seeded using a Club’s Power Score.
👉 A Power Score is based on a Club’s historical performance over its last five seasons played
This method:
- Groups the strongest Clubs together
- Creates highly competitive, top-tier Divisions
- Rewards sustained excellence
👉 Think of this as the “heavyweight divisions”
🌎 2. Geographic Seeding (Local Rivalries)
Other seasons are seeded by location — often state, region, or country.
This method:
- Creates local rivalries
- Makes results more meaningful at the regional level
- Encourages Clubs to recruit and grow locally
👉 Example: Ohio vs Ohio, Texas vs Texas, Europe vs Europe
🎲 3. Random Seeding (Anything Can Happen)
Sometimes… we just mix it all up.
👉 Clubs are placed into Divisions randomly
This method:
- Levels the playing field
- Creates unexpected matchups
- Gives developing Clubs a real shot at winning a Division
🧠 HOW SUPER 8 WORKS
Each week:
- Take theTop 8 “A” Teams from every Club
- Rank them against all other Clubs’ Top 8 Teams
Example:
If there are 100 Clubs
- 100 × 8 =800 Teams ranked
Points:
- 1st = 800 points
- 2nd = 799
- 3rd = 798
…
🔁 SAME RULE APPLIES
👉 Super 8 points are also reallocated weekly
So again:
- No carryover
- No banking points
- Each week stands on its own
HOW TO READ YOUR CLUB SCORES & RANKINGS
Here’s a clear, explanation using Akron Club’s 90:/5 March final Club Standings as an example of how to decipher both Canis Magnus and Super 8 point allocations within a Club.

✅ AKRON TEAMS THAT EARNED CANIS MAGNUS POINTS
These “A” Teams finished above 103.5, so they scored for Akron:
- Brian Baldwin & Brodie– 161.0
- Jennifer Earles & Lucy– 158.0
- Pete Karasz & Scout– 156.0
- Carolyn Calvert & Max– 138.5
- Mark Vitullo & Vinny– 122.5
- Brad Kurtz & Cooper– 110.5
👉 These 6 Teams were in the Top 40% of all “A” Teams worldwide
So:
✔️ They earned Canis Magnus Club Points
✔️ They earned the Canis Magnus Patch
❌ WHO DID NOT (AND WHY)
Even though these are solid scores, they fell below the cut line:
- Jeff Schmitt & Astrid – 103.0
- Debbie Zendlo & Tilly – 103.0
- Everyone else below that
👉 Just missing the cut = 0 Club Points
Also important:
- Carolyn’sB dog (Sampson) scored 107.0
❌ But B dogs never count for Club scoring
🥇 SUPER 8 — WHO SCORED (AND WHY)
Super 8 works differently:
👉 Take the Top 8 “A” Teams on the Club
👉 Rank them against every other Club’s Top 8
🎯 AKRON’S TOP 8 “A” TEAMS
These are Akron’s Super 8 contributors:
- Brian Baldwin & Brodie – 161.0
- Jennifer Earles & Lucy – 158.0
- Pete Karasz & Scout – 156.0
- Carolyn Calvert & Max – 138.5
- Mark Vitullo & Vinny – 122.5
- Brad Kurtz & Cooper – 110.5
- Jeff Schmitt & Astrid – 103.0
- Debbie Zendlo & Tilly – 103.0
👉 These 8 Teams are ranked against all other Clubs’ Top 8
🔑 KEY DIFFERENCE FROM CANIS MAGNUS
- Jeff and Debbiedid NOT earn Canis Magnus points
- BUT theyDO count in Super 8
Why?
👉 Super 8 does NOT use the Top 40% cut-off
👉 It only cares about your Club’s Top 8 Teams
WHY TWO CLUB RANKING SYSTEMS?
- Canis Magnus rewards depth(more strong players = more scoring chances)
- Super 8 rewards top-end performance(best 8 vs best 8) giving smaller clubs a chance to compete against the giants.
