JAKE’O FLIES HIGH FOR ANTHEM, AZ

++ WINTER SEASON BEGINS SATURDAY, JANUARY 13 ++

People who become leaders in our sport always have one thing in common . . . a disc-crazy dog with extraordinary Frisbee skills consumes their life and their K9 Frisbee journey begins.

Such was the case in 2017 when Jake’O, a yellow Australian Shepherd pup, became part of the Scully family in their Arizona home. “My boy was already a natural frisbee-catching wonder at just 5 months old,” recounted Bill Scully who played backyard toss & fetch with his disc-obsessed pup daily.

“When Jake’O was just a year-and-a-half I learned about the K9 Frisbee Worldwide League and thought “wow, we could be rock stars in this sport”. I found and joined the nearby Phoenix K9 Frisbee Club where Jake’O and I played our rookie season in Summer Down Under 2019.”

“I quickly learned Jake’O’s skills greatly exceeded mine,” said Bill, sheepishly. “In our 2-round debut, we made just 2 catches for 4.5 points. It was evident — I was our Team’s weak link and I needed to improve my throwing skills to live up to my dog.”

“Here’s a funny story,” remembered Bill of that debut performance. “It wasn’t until the day before opening day of week 1, SDU 2019, that I found out I had to throw the same single disc. We had to completely change our game plan overnight.”

Bill & Jake’O played five more K9 Frisbee League seasons with the Phoenix Club steadily improving and moving up the worldwide disc-dogging ranks.

5 seasons and a World Championship appearance later, Jake’O helped Bill earn his promotion to the Masters Division in the Summer 2020 Season.

Bit with the disc-dogging bug and enthralled with the K9 Frisbee League format, Bill’s leadership instincts kicked in and he founded the Anthem K9 Frisbee Club for the Fall 2020 season. Then, in the following Fall 90:/5 Season, Captain Scully & Jake’O capped their rise with an Expert Division promotion to make that rock-star dreams come true.”

Bill went on to Captain the Anthem Club which grew and improved steadily over the next couple years, so much so that Anthem earned their first Worldwide Season Championship in the in the 90:/5 Fall 2022 season.

After that championship season, personal obligations demanded that Bill relinquish his Captains duties of the Club he nurtured and loved. Under John McCurry, Anthem’s new Captain, the Club continues as one of the League dominant K9 Frisbee Clubs, capturing two more Season Championships in 90:/5 March 2023 and most the most recent Winter 2023 Season.

The Summer Down Under 2022 Season patch pays tribute to the high-flying Jake’O, a big 62-pound Aussie who with Bill continue their K9 Frisbee journey as key members and solid competitors continually racking up Canis Magnus points for the Anthem, Arizona K9 Frisbee Club.
