So, who are the dogs honored on this year’s patch?
Maggie, a red border collie owned by L’Avenir, Quebec’s Jarrod Demers, was only 14 months old when she died in 2017, at the very beginning of her K9 Frisbee career.
Jarrod & Maggie were attending their very first disc seminar after practicing all winter when she suddenly became ill. She wasn’t well so he did not get to play with her. She died in his arms in the following Monday morning. The cause was never determined.
A few months later, Jarrod was contacted by another border collie owner whose dog wasn’t fit for his family. Jarrod adopted the dog and named her Myška. For 4 days she hid in the house. She was anxious about everything. She was Maggie’s liter mate. 8 months later they were competing at the USDDN World Championship together.
Maggie was a sweet little dog who never got a chance but inspired others to push harder.
Rex is one of more than 250 Belgian Malinois currently playing in the League. He’s a 4-year-old powerhouse owned and trained by the Captain of the Alfa Canis Zagreb, Croatia Club, Josip Šantorić.
Zagreb, Croatia, originally Captained by Ales Horvat who moved to Slovenia and started a new Club there, was first European Club to join the League.
Rex, with a little help from Josip, powered Zagreb to a Season Championship in the 2018 Spring Season and this Team is still going strong. When Rex isn’t playing frisbee, he’s working happy and hard at obedience, bikejoring and canicross in competitions throughout Europe.
The black & white border collie Laika might be the most famous of the three dogs on the patch – and she definitely had the most impact on the sport of K9 Frisbee.
Born in 1995, Laika was Chris Sexton’s first frisbee dog. She was a pure-bred Border Collie, but with an unusually curly coat. She had 2 different colored eyes-blue and brown.
Chris, a current member of the Denver, Colorado Club, had been throwing discs, mostly the golf kind, for 30 years when Laika came into his life. They were an instant K9 Frisbee sensation.
Laika was a hot ticket in Colorado, with appearances for the Denver Broncos and Rapids. She was also a brilliant competition dog. She was the first dog from Colorado to qualify for the World Championships, in 2000. That year, she also won the Quadruped Series National Championship, another first for Colorado.
Laika was all over TV and newspapers for years. Laika competed in the World Championships 3 times in her long and storied career and held the Colorado Quadruped distance record for 7 years.
Not only was Laika Chris’s motivation to start the Northern Colorado Disc Dogs, one of the oldest disc dog clubs in the world, she was the genesis for the start of the UFO World Cup Series which is today played around the world and managed by Chris.
After a storied 14-year career that had a huge impact on our sport, Laika passed peacefully in 2009.
